Flow it, Show it; Long as God can grow it, My Hair!

Since deciding that I needed to make a career change, whether it be school or Peace Corps, I have decided to change my hair into something I’ve always wanted. The question is no longer WHEN I will do this (for it will be within the year AFTER my bike ride) but WHAT I will do.

Years ago, my friend Tara used to braid my entire head of hair for Taco Bell. No extensions were used, as I was young and had full, thick hair. But now, I want fuller hair.

Also years ago, my friend Nick once told me that I would look really good with dreadlocks. At first I balked at this idea, but have since then come to enjoy the idea.

As my last year of working at my current company commences, I have decided to start making my dream of beautiful hair a reality. No longer will I let the corporate man dictate what my beautiful locks should look like. I will be in control of MY OWN HAIR’S DESTINY!!!

So I found some pictures of hair off the internet. I had Josh photo shop my face into the photos, to give everyone an idea of what I’m thinking of:

Cassie with Dreadlocks:

The Pros of this is that it's natural and 100% my hair for free. The cons is that it will take a long time to grow out to this length in the photo. 3-4 years.
With Josh's brother in town, i grilled him on his dreadlocks - as well as researched them online. i think i could swing this 'do - and keep it nice and clean. i have heard some not too nice descriptions of smelly, bug-infested dreads that scared me a little - but after researching them online, i found that this can be true and happen to dreads ONLY IF YOU ARE A SMELLY HIPPIE.
So no fear there. You DO wash them often, and you DO have to take care of them as much (if not more) than regular hair to keep them healthy and pretty.

Here is Cassie with Braids:

Now, the pros of this is that i would get instant hair and could have whatever colors extentions i wanted (i want black braids and maybe 1 or 2 extentions with color). The cons are that this is temporary, i will be spending tons of money, and i will have to continue to go to the beauty shop for upkeep.

So there you have it. I'm still debating which 'do to dawn. I'm leaning heavily toward the dreads, but wanted to get other people's opinions. Have any dread or extention stories? Any more pros and cons to think about? i'd like your feedback!

Real hair! Hands down. That fake stuff gets all frizzy and, well, it just looks FAKE.
The major con that the fair(fake+hair=clever portmanteau)has over natural dreadlochs is that you can have the colors you desire without damaging your hair with dyes and bleaches.
I hope that when you do get this new hair your chin doesn't disappear like in these photos.

I kinda like the braids, but to tell you the truth, you would look hot with the Enid hair cut!

HA!

One of my co-workers just walked by, saw your pic on my computer, and told me to stop looking at "hippie porn".

2 bits of "ditto" to add... 1) Yeah! Quit chopping up yo' pretty face w/ photoshop. It makes you look like an emaciated 2nd grader!

and 2) to what my soul-brother Josh said -- HELLS YEAH!

If you get the dreads, you'll have to do some Twyla Tharpe dance moves to match your post-title.

Sorry Cassie, I know Im the one that did the hack photoshop job on these, but they do look a little freaky. Yep, emaciated 2nd grader really isn't a good look for you. lol : )

Dreads are nasty and look awful, even when they are clean. I've never seen anyone with dreadlocks that looked good. I think you should grow your hair long and bun it up ala princess leia. Not really, but that would look killer.

Thanks Cassie, I have other skills to, you know, like nunchuck skills, bowhunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.

My vote is for braids as dreads are one of the hardest looks to pull off well (cornrows being another).

But you might be the exception to the rule.

The other problem is that it would take 3 - 4 years to find out.

` I have somewhat Enid-like hair. I recommend my style because you can just do-it-yourself. Also, I hate bangs and hair growing down the back of my neck, but that's just me.
` I just get in front of the mirror, tilt my head back, and judging by the angle at which my hair hangs, cut it all off so that it's flat on the bottom, and jump in the shower to wash away all the shards of hair.
` It only takes about fifteen minutes. Then again, I'm pretty good.

` ...Then again, a mohawk would be kinda interesting.

Caff X
it is Tharp, not Tharpe..but you even mentioning her name may get you some booty (I said Maybe!)I am wiping tears of artistic pride from my face right now.

Cassie
Now those are the pics you should have sent in to your highschool for the 'where are they now' page. Well since I seem to be the only one that has never met you in person yet...I have no opinion. But I do know a hairstylist in Denver at Luxe Salon who I believe had the extensions but now has the real thing and it looks good on her. (I'd go to her for your next haircut/style decision!)

One question: Wouldn't these really hurt to sleep on?

AHHHH NO!!!

haha, I was waiting for you to say something, Mary. You don't think matching mom and daughter dre(a)ds would be good for the bike ride?

Cassie: dreads, yes. That's all I can muster because I'm so smitten with Amber right now. I mean, who uses the word "portmanteau" in their everyday vernacular? Be still my heart...

I love it when people do what the want with their hair/body/life, but I ask one thing Cas... if you do the dred thing and crash at my house don't be offended when I tell you that you will have to wash the pillow case you use that was on the pillow I make you use when you pass out on my couch. Even the best tended dreds can get a little smelly. I think the look would work on you though.

Hey, when you come to do the MS150, will you have an evening that you are going to visit with KC people?

i like the look.

i will be in KC for a spell! i'll be there the 8-12! the 9th and 10th are my bike ride, so no boozing it up before then! i have to conserve my little to no energy as it is!!!

and i'm still leaning toward the dreads - but This and That - i might get the name of the woman at Luxe Salon so i can investigate the matter further....
it would be nice to have the advise/opinion of someone who has done it.....

` AHHHH YES!

i'm leaning towards the braids with colored extensions. true, it's cost a bit, but the ability to change the color of your extensions whenever you please (or, i suppose, whenever you can afford to).........

Dreds are disgusting, even if they are clean. What do you have to put in your hair to make it stick together like that?
