The Movie of the Year

Flaws and all, "Strangers with Candy" has one invaluable thing going for it: the utterly fearless and downright brilliant comic performance of Amy Sedaris..."

I can't wait to see this movie. It got mixed reviews, but I don't care since I'm a true fan!

Here are a couple sites if you're interrested.
Movie Site
Jerri Blank Site

So, for this Summer 2006 Movie Series - I would like to see:
1. Strangers with Candy
2. The Proposition
3. Pirates part deux
4. Superman IMAX/3D
5. A Scanner Darkly
6. Little Miss Sunshine
7. Lady in the Water
8. Clerks 2

Although I am hesitant on Clerks 2, I love Kevin Smith and don't believe he would sell out his first groundbreaking cult classic for anything other than a satire on why sequels fail. Plus it's got all our favorite cast members, including a disturbing reinactment of the Silence of the Lambs dance.....

Am I missing any Must-Sees?
Tenacious D isn't scheduled until November, so other than that, I can't think of any others! Any suggestions?

I'm interested in Scanner Darkly, tho I'm much more interested in PKD's ideas than anything he's ever actually written.

I've been really busy at work, but I'm working on a post about why "Superman IV Quest for Peace" is better than "Superman Returns"

I would just like to see a movie that doesn't involve a superhero or an animal...in other words...no more kids movies.
And defintely have to see Caff X's argument for why Superman 4 is even worth watching again...unless one is stoned!

The two topping my list are A Scanner Darkly and Lady in the Water. Other than that, I want to see about everything on your list. We saw Brick the other day...it was okay, kinda hard to follow. Oh yeah, and the new Will Ferrel movie.

i didn't really want to see the new Will Farrell movie SEE THIS POST - although the "Frat Pack" is an awesome name for those guys! Personally, I'm a Steve Carell fan - ever since The Daily Show. And i LOVE Paul Rudd. He's the cutie of the bunch - I just want to pinch his cheeks (all of them!)Especially in Wet Hot American Summer (one of my all time favorite movies ever in the world!!!!)

I like Will Ferrell, Luke/Owen Wilson, and Jack Black. Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller are no-talent-ass-clowns.

Somebody please tell me that scanner darkly movie is not in that stupid animation they show in the previews throughout the whole movie.

Spoony Quine said...

` Yes, it is ALL CRAPPY CELL ANIMATION!!

` This is why I don't watch movies anymore.

Ted said...

Actually, it's called "rotoscoping"... cell animation is Snow White / Little Mermaid / Care Bears, etc.

` D'oh!!

` Also, I hear that Pirates is pretty good although the cliffhanger at the end really pissed off Monkey Kitty Guy (who I just learned is not circumcised, yay!! Whoa, I'm shutting up now).

` Yee.

can't take credit for 'frat pack'. just read an article on hollywood and that is what they (whoever 'they' are) are calling them because they are in each others movies. I even just saw Zoolander again...which I hated the first time and the scene with the male models drinkin orange mochaccinos and spraying themselves with gasoline in slo-mo is freakin hilarious. it is one of those better the second time movies. same with dodgeball!
I hated the first Pirates movie..yeah yeah...start throwing your laptop at me now. so maybe I have to see that again and see what I missed.

I'm with you on Steve Carrell being funny, love him in the office, Anchorman. Just saw 40 year old virgin the other night for the second time and it's even funnier. I still disagree with you about Will Ferrell.....see my comment in your earlier post. His shtick is getting a little old though.

To Aaron: I know you've never liked Ben Stiller (I think he's moderately funny, but has been exceptionally funny movies, which is no credit to him necessarily), but I can't believe you called Vince Vaughn an no-talent-ass-clown. I thought he played well in the following movies: Swingers, Clay Pigeons, Made, The Cell, Old School, Anchorman, Wedding Crashers, Thumbsucker, and especially Psycho. Now, granted, he does tend to play similar characters in most of these movies with the exception of Psycho, Thumbsucker, and Clay Pigeons. So, I can see how you could call him no-talent based on the fact that he hasn't shown a lot of range. However, one of the actors you listed as good (Owen Wilson) falls into the same category by mostly playing the goofball in his movies. See the following: You, Me and Dupree, Wedding Crashers, Starsky and Hutch, The Big Bounce, Armageddon, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Zoolander. The only movie that I saw him in that he wasn't a goofball was The Life Aquatic. Not that I'm saying Owen Wilson is a bad actor, I just think he could very easily be put in the same category as Vince Vaughn.

I think A Scanner Darkly is cool because it's trying something that hasn't been done before by using that style of animation. I won't judge it solely on that though....it's got to have a kick ass plot. It's already got two bad marks against before I've even seen it. Those would be.....Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder (can't stand either one of them). Balancing them out is Robert Downy Jr. and Woody Harrelson. Robert Downy Jr. was pretty good in a recent movie I saw called Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. Woody Harrelson was in a good movie recently as well....The Prairie Home Companion, which I highly recommend.

To This and That: right on with Zoolander! That movie kills me. My favorite part is either the walk-off or when Mugatu hypnotizes Zoolander. I never get tired of that movie.

Lastly, I'm with Jade.....Mutha fuckin' snakes on a mutha fuckin' plane! And drink Samuel L. Jackson beer...it'll get you drunk! You might even fight a nigga or two! I'm sure that movie is going to be horrible and I can't wait to see it. I think I'll wait till video though. I leave you with a favorite quote that keeps getting stuck in my head....I wanted to work it into the post, but it didn't seem to fit anywhere. "Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine? No, but it's sterile and I like the taste. What movie?

you might want to check out 'Waking Life" by Linklater also. same rotoscoping technique. it is one of caffx's favorite movies but honestly I am not smart enough to make it through. I may know medicine well but philospophy is not my thing. I tune right out.
I disagree with both of you about Ben Stiller. You may not like him as an actor, but he wrote or cowrote most of the movies mentioned so kudos to that.

I agree that will ferrell needs a hit soon. he does play the same type of character in all movies now. BUT 'Elf' is freakin holiday masterpiece!!!

I tried to sit through "Waking Life" but couldn't make it. Perhaps I should give it another shot. But the plot (or lack thereof?) didn't seem near as interesting as "Scanner Darkly."

Yeah, Cassie. Post some pictures! I am getting mine developed soon that may include some pool hijinks. Hopefully, Aaron's bum is not involved.

Elwess - was that from dodgeball?

Aaron said...

I'm sure you guys wouldn't have been interested in this movie, but Owen Wilson played a dramatic leading roll in a movie called 'Behind Enemy Lines'.

It was in the same vein as Top Gun - which has everybody's favorite leading man - but I think 'Lines' had more substance and less style.

I haven't really like any of Vince Vaughn's performances. He doesn't strike me as ever 'becoming a character', it seems like he plays himself in all the movies.

jason said...

yeah, dodgeball. I liked Behind Enemy Lines....but I don't remember Owen Wilson in it....oh wait...I'm thinking of something else with Ed Harris and Jude Law I think....some movie about snipers in WWII.

enemy at the gates...yeah, that's it.
